We’d like to extend a gigantic thank you to everyone who helped to make the DCPLA Used Book Sale a great success!
We couldn’t have done it without the support and hard work of our Board of Directors, Library staff, high school volunteers, members, and shoppers, as well as our community supporters, such as Republic Services, Duggan's Serra Mortuary, Daly City and SSF Public School Superintendents, Westlake Shopping Center, Serramonte Shopping Center, and the Jefferson Elementary School District.
Thank you, Mayor Juslyn Manalo, Councilmember Pamela DiGiovanni, and Supervisor David Canepa for stopping by, and thank you to Discover Books, and especially Arturo, for taking our unsold books and giving them new homes.
We’ll look forward to holding the sale again in 2023!
Gordon L. King Memorial Grant
A generous donation to the DCPLA by a member has established the Gordon L. King Memorial Grant. This grant was presented to City Council of Daly City to go in its entirety to the Bayshore branch, where it will be used to purchase outdoor Wi-Fi and to build and diversify their starter collection of Playaway Launchpads for checkout.
When asked why he chose the Bayshore branch in particular for this grant, the donor replied that he wanted to show the branch some extra love and has a grandmother who was a stalwart support and advocate of libraries, as they are a great way to help provide badly-needed access to educational materials that may not be available at home or even some schools.
Laptop Dispensing Kiosk
On June 14, 2021, Daly City Public Libraries were presented with a grant of $23,000.
This grant is thanks to a generous donation from the Carl Gellert and Celia Berta Gellert Foundation, as well as donations from DCPLA members, donors, and sponsors, to purchase a laptop dispensing kiosk and computers for the John Daly branch.
Automated Laptop Dispensing Kiosks not only securely store, recharge and wipe clean computing devices but make managing a self-contained automated checkout program or supplementing a manual program easy and empowering for all library visitors.
We are excited about our libraries reopening to the public, appreciate Library staffs’ dedication to keeping patrons safe, and are happy to be able to provide tools to assist in that process.
Madeleine Hur Named as Daly City’s First Youth Poet Laureate
In a virtual gala held on April 17, 2021, Oceana High School student Madeleine Hur, 16, was named the Inaugural Youth Poet Laureate of the City of Daly City and became the first youth poet laureate in San Mateo County.
DCPLA launched the Daly City Youth Poet Laureate program in October, the first such program in all of San Mateo County. In partnership with the National Youth Poet Laureate Program by Urban Word and Daly City Public Library, the program celebrates teen poets ages 13-18 who live or attend school in Daly City, and exhibit a commitment to artistic excellence, civic engagement, leadership, and social justice. “Although it is a little bit intimidating to be the first youth poet laureate in San Mateo County, I now know that this is something I can do to contribute to the various movements for change and equality, and it is extremely empowering,” Hur said. Hur also won a $5,000 award sponsored by the Philanthropic Ventures Foundation.
She will represent Daly City at community events between May 2021 and May 2022, serving as an ambassador and champion of the literary arts, community engagement, and youth empowerment. In addition to poetry, Hur is interested in politics and the legislative process and is involved in student government. She currently serves as a Student Trustee for the Jefferson Union High School District. “The judges unanimously chose [Hur] for [her] strong poetic voice, performance experience, and service to the community,” according to San Mateo County Poet Laureate Aileen Cassinetto who announced the winner and first runner-up. “This program reflects the forward-thinking and innovation of DCPLA members,” said Daly City Mayor Juslyn Manalo during the event. Judges included Oakland Youth Poet Laureate Greer Nakadegawa-Lee, Daly City librarian Karen Engle, Bayshore Elementary School teacher Luisa Santos, Westmoor High School teacher Joal Truong-Vargas, and DCPLA Director and Past President Rosie Tejada.
First runner-up Jescent Marcelino is 15 years old and a student at Jefferson High School. Marcelino immigrated from the Philippines just over a year ago and credits poetry and role models Vice President Kamala Harris and Amanda Gorman for helping her find her voice. Competition finalists included Chloe Chou, a 13-year-old author; 17-year-old Briana Leung who is a storyteller and community artist; Iris Li, a 15-year-old environmental activist; 17-year-old Allen Mata who is the Public Relations Officer of his school’s Social Justice Club and helps educate his peers about voting; 16-year-old Lindsay Pagaduan who is a member of the Junior Statesmen of America which helps students to “become involved in civics and responsible leadership”; Nathaly Perez, an immigrant from El Salvador who volunteers at an elderly care home; 13-year-old Hanna Docampo Pham who is a library advocate; and 15-year-old Eva Pradhan who wishes to establish a poetry club to foster community building.
The DCPLA Youth Poet Laureate program was spearheaded by Victoria Maier Magbilang, Executive Director of the DCPLA. The event on Saturday also celebrated DCPLA’s 10th anniversary. Since 2011, DCPLA has raised over $265,000 for the Daly City libraries which serve Daly City, Broadmoor and Colma residents.
“Libraries create infinite resources for our communities. They help us thrive. DCPLA helps libraries by creating fundraising initiatives,” said Library Board of Trustees President Angella Logarta.
More importantly, according to DCPLA Board Member and event co-chair Patricia Devera, “in addition to connecting people to information, libraries connect people to people. They are safe havens for kids when schools are not in session… [they] enable older adults to stay engaged in a digital world… [and they keep those who are] homebound connected to the larger community.”

DCPLA Receives Commendation from Daly City
The Daly City Public Library Associates received a Commendation from Mayor Juslyn Manalo and the City Council of Daly City last night, acknowledging the DCPLA's 10 years of service to our community and the launching of the Daly City Youth Poet Laureate program. Accepting the Commendation were DCPLA Board of Directors President Brian Dossey and Executive Director Victoria Magbilang.
The Board of Directors of the DCPLA would like to thank Mayor Manalo and the City Council of Daly City for this honor and for your ongoing support of our Daly City public libraries.
DCPLA: 10 Years Strong
In her State of the City address, Mayor Juslyn Manalo commended the Daly City Public Library Associates (DCPLA) as “a beam of Light to our communities shining brightly for our Youth, Families and Seniors by providing funding to support our library needs.” Mayor Manalo further stated, “Libraries are community hubs essential to our neighborhoods. I am so honored to present a Commendation to DCPLA for 10 years of extraordinary dedication and generosity to the Daly City community.”
DCPLA is gearing up for its anniversary celebration which will take place virtually on April 17 at 6:30 p.m. Aside from a silent auction with items like a 2-night stay at the Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa City and a Honey Bear by fnnch, all attendees will be entered for a free raffle to win an Apple Watch. The highlight of the event, however, is the commencement ceremony for the Daly City Youth Poet Laureate, the first in San Mateo County. Founded in 2008 by Urban Word, the National Youth Poet Laureate Program identifies and celebrates teen poets who exhibit a commitment to artistic excellence, civic engagement, youth leadership and social justice.
“We are incredibly proud of our many accomplishments in the past ten years, and are excited to start a new chapter in our legacy with the launch of the Daly City Youth Poet Laureate program,” said Victoria Maier Magbilang, DCPLA’s Executive Director. “Showcasing our support of our libraries as well as the arts, DCPLA: 10 Years Strong will be an amazing community event!”
Playaway Launchpads
On November 23, 2020, DCPLA presented two grants to the City of Daly City.
The first grant of $5,220 is due to a generous donation from the Town of Colma, and will go to purchase additional Chromebooks and Wi-Fi hotspots for checkout by library card holders.
To expand upon the ongoing Circulating Technology Grant, DCPLA will also donate $5,000 to the Library to purchase Playaway Launchpads. Funding for this donation is thanks to the support of our members, donors, and sponsors.
Daly City Public Library requested adding Playaway Launchpads to the circulating collection, focusing on the needs of young children and their families; specifically, as it relates to early literacy and kindergarten readiness. Launchpads are user-friendly tablets that each come pre-loaded with between 10 and 20 subject or theme-based apps. They are durable, even for small hands, as well as secure. Outside content can never be downloaded or added onto the tablets once they are ready for circulation. Launchpads are both educational and fun to explore and do not require Wi-Fi. Families can access them anywhere, just by turning on the device. These educational tablets would benefit the numerous families in Daly City who do not currently have access to mobile technology or Wi-Fi in their homes.
With the $5,000 donation from the DCPLA, the Library will be able to purchase a total of 30 launchpads, as well as 25 additional USB replacement cords. Each launchpad comes with an orange circulation case, an AC adaptor, a USB cord, and a 1-year warranty.
